I adore sarongs because of their versatility. They can easily be turned into a skirt, worn as a dress, or in a pinch used as a towel to sit on at the beach. But a lot of my clients are hesitant because they don’t know how to tie a sarong. Others, have bought sarongs but don’t wear them because they aren’t sure what to do with them. Well, ladies, that’s what I am here for! It’s time to break out those sarongs. Below I go through how to tie a sarong in four different ways, from wearing it as a maxi skirt to a halter dress. You can either watch the YouTube video or follow along using the steps and pictures below.

How To Tie A Sarong Into A Midi Skirt

There are two different ways I tie a sarong to wear it as a skirt. The first one will give you a midi skirt with longer bow tails.

  1. Start by wrapping the sarong around your waist.
  2. Take both corners and tie a double knot in the front. First, go left over right & pull the fabric through vertically.
  3. Then go left over right again, and pull the fabric through horizontally. (If you need more clarification on what I mean by “vertically” and “horizontally” check out the YouTube video at the top of the post.)

Tip: Leave the knot in front, or move it to the side of your hip for a side slit.

How To Tie A Sarong Into A Maxi Skirt

The second way to tie a sarong into a skirt will give you a maxi skirt with a tinier bow in front.

  1. Wrap the sarong around your waist.
  2. Instead of grabbing the ends, grab the fabric halfway in between your waist and the corner on each side of your body.
  3. Then tie a double knot. Go left over right & pull the fabric through vertically.
  4. Go left over right again, and pull the fabric through horizontally.

A halter dress is one of my favorite ways to wear a sarong, and it’s a great option for protecting your chest from the sun.

  1. Wrap the sarong around your body, bringing both ends under your arms and in front of your chest.
  2. Take the end in your right hand and swing it over your left shoulder.
  3. Take the end in your left hand and swing it over your right shoulder. Both ends should now be overlapping across your chest.
  4. Tie a double knot behind your neck to keep everything secure.
